14 AVON LAKE -- Mrs. Susan A. Horwedel, 77, of 639 Center Rd., died yesterday at her home after a brief illness.

Mrs. Horwedel was a life-long resident of Avon Lake. She was a member of St. Mary's church and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Survivors include her husband, Fred G.; three daughters, Mrs. Hildred Karmen, of Avon, Mrs. Elizabeth Rockstroh of Cleveland, and Mrs. Vilma Klingshirn of Avon; a son, Lester of Avon Lake; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10am in St. Mary's church, Avon. Friends may call at the Burmeister Funeral Home today and tomorrow from 3-5 and 7-9 pm. The Altar and Rosary Society will recite the rosary Sunday at 3pm in the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.

15 Bessie E. Amsler, 84, of the Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of Knox, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, July 29, 2018, at the Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Sligo, after many years of declining health.

Born September 24, 1933, in Knox, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Nellie Wingard Sheesley.

Bessie was a 1952 graduate of Salem High School. She worked for Sylvania Electric Products in Brookville assembling radio tubes and later as a cashier for Jamesway.

On August 24, 1957, Bessie married Robert L. Amsler who preceded her in death in 1995.

Bessie enjoyed playing bingo, doing word search puzzles, and listening to music by the Gaithers.

Bessie is survived by her two daughters, Beverly Amsler of Roanoke, VA, and Betty Jo Amsler of Winchester, VA; two brothers-in-law, Harry Harnish and Tom Amsler both of Knox; a sister-in-law Alma Jean Sheesley of Emlenton and several nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband and parents, Bessie was preceded in death by her two sisters, Sara Beals and Helen Harnish and four brothers, Harold Sheesley, Calvin (Pete) Sheesley, Melvin Sheesley and Harry (Hen) Sheesley.

Friends will be received from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the McEntire-Weaver Funeral Home Inc. at 504 East Penn Avenue in Knox. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday in the funeral home with Pastor Wade Barto of the Knox United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Shippenville.

32 Ellen Jean Amsler, 88 of Knox, PA, passed away Monday, May 10, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born as an only child on February 7, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio (Cuyahoga County) to the late Myron Smalley and Lucella (Toll) Smalley she later was adopted and her name was changed to Cicman at 12 yr. of age.

She graduated from Shippenville High School in 1950 and returned to School earning a master degree in English and Bachelor of Science degree in library science from Clarion State Teachers College in 1966. She taught at several local schools before teaching senior high English classes at Clarion Limestone School district and later retiring as the elementary librarian.

Her love of art and theater lead her to perform in plays and paint pictures with all media. She belonged to several art and theater groups in the local area. She played the piano proficiently and sang in local choirs and the Sweet Adelines. Along with playing bridge and western square dancing she also drove her 550 Honda motorcycle in her younger years. For a few years she lived in Florida over the wintertime eventually staying in Pennsylvania due to the lighting storms.

On February 13, 1953, Ellen married James L. Amsler Jr. who on October 14, 2013, preceded her in death. They shared 60 years of marriage together.

She is survived by two daughters, Brenda Polatty of Shippenville, PA, and Lynn and husband Denny Neely of Shippenville, PA. Five grandchildren, Jamie and Cory Hooks of Shippenville, Stephanie and Thomas Stefanelli of Oak Creek, Colorado, Andrew Polatty of Clarion, Casey and Meagan Neely of Lucinda PA, and Buck and Brianna Neely of Valentia, PA. Seven grandchildren, Trenton, Treyven, and Tyson Hooks and Guy and Dean Neely, and Samuel and Nicholas Stefanelli.

In addition to her parents and husband Ellen was preceded in death by her step-father, John G. Cicman.

33 F. Carlos Gonzales, MD, of Oakton, Virginia, passed away on October 14, 2021, at Fair Oaks Hospital with his three children by his side. He was 77 years old.

Dr. Gonzales was born in Peru and attended medical school at the National University of San Marcos. He emigrated from Peru to the United States in 1970 and completed his residency in internal medicine at Wilmington Medical Center in Delaware followed by a fellowship at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

As a board certified internist, he began his private practice in 1978 on West Drive in Fairfax, Virginia. Hospitals he worked at include Commonwealth Doctors Hospital, INOVA Fairfax Hospital, and INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital. Dr. Gonzales was a generous and selfless physician and had enormous compassion for his patients and a strong bond with his colleagues. His deep love for his work has left an indelible mark on his community.

Some of his favorite things in life were daily runs, trips to New York City, cooking and eating Peruvian food, tending to his houseplants, going to soccer games with his children, rooting for the Washington Football Team and the Peru national soccer team, spending time with his granddaughter and visiting his family in Peru.

Carlos?s enduring love and devotion to his family was unmatched. He is preceded in death by his mother, Paulina Nieto; sister, Yolanda Gonzales; and uncle, Edmundo ?Machaco? Vilchez. He is survived by his daughters, Dr. Jennifer Gonzales of Richmond, Virginia, and Gail Gonzales of Fair Haven, New Jersey, along with Gail?s husband, Timothy Lyons, and their daughter, Olivia Rose, his beloved granddaughter; son, Jonathan Gonzales and his partner, Danielle Vaughan, of Astoria, New York; former spouse, Virginia Gonzales of Clifton, Virginia; sister, Esther Pardo and her husband, Teodoro Pardo, of Lima, Peru; sister, Gloria Sandoval; niece, Maritza Gonzales of Lima, Peru; nephew, Erich Pardo and his wife, Karen, and their daughter, Alessia of Lima, Peru; nephew, Carlos Barillas of Lima, Peru; and his friend Sammy Yimam.

Visitation will be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home at 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 23, followed by a service at 1:00 p.m.

A complication of diseases caused the death of Mrs. Elizabeth (Eyler) Sheesley, widow of J. J. Sheesley , at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dora Meade, of Brush valley, on July 2. Mrs. Sheesley was born near Pine Grove Church, this county on June 21, 1863. Her husband passed away on December 8, 1893. Surviving are the following children: Robert, of Hamilton; Mrs. Dora Meade, of Brush Valley; Paul Sheesley, of Knox; Mrs. Mary Thomas, of Punxsutawney, and Rev. Joseph Sheesley, of Elliotsville. Two sisters, Mrs. Sophia Gahagan and Mrs. Mary Machel reside in Punxsutawney. Burial was made in the Cyphert [sic-Syphrit ] cemetery, near Hamilton [sic ], on Sunday. "

39 Funeral of Victim of Mule's Kick

Barton, MD., May 6 -- The funeral of Charles Berry, aged 68, who died Tuesday evening at the Miners' Hospital, Frostburg, was held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist Episcopal church here, the Rev. F.I. Mumford, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Stanley H. Jewell, pastor of the Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Berry was a stable boss in Barton. He was kicked by a mule in the stable on Sunday. His lungs were punctured. Besides his wife, the following children survive: William Berry of Lonaconing, Edward and Harry Berry of Barton, Mrs. Anna Whiteford of Baltimore; Mrs. Iiam Dohme of Lonaconing, and Joseph and Helen Berry at home.

41 George H. Amsler, 92, of Cabot, formerly of East McKeesport, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014. He was born March 20, 1922, in Franklin, a son of the late James L. Sr. and Hazel (Wiseman) Amsler. He was a member of the Linway United Presbyterian Church in North Versailles, the East McKeesport Lodge 765 Free and Accepted Masons, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Pittsburgh, Syria Temple, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Al-O-Mon Forest, McKeesport, East Hills Royal Arch Chapter 268, Mon Valley Shrine Luncheon Club, Liberty Valley Council No. 50, Royal and Selected Master Masons and Duquesne Commandry No. 72 of the Knights Templar. He was a retired supervisor at the Westinghouse Air Brake Company in Wilmerding, a World War II Army veteran and a member of the American Legion Post in Saxonburg and a VFW life member. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, James L. Jr., Cecil E., Robert L. and Richard D. Amsler. He is survived by a brother, Thomas W. (Helen) Amsler, of Knox. 42 George V. Beitzel, 95, formerly of Reading, passed away at 6:35 p.m. of natural causes at Topton Lutheran Home, where he was a resident since 1997.

George was born in Reading on Feb. 18, 1915, a son of the late George D. and Beulah E. (Frantz) Beitzel.

He was the widower of Pearl M. (Zuber) Beitzel. She died Aug. 23, 1998.

Mr. Beitzel worked as a machinist at CarTech, Reading, for 44 years. He retired in 1980.

He served in the U.S. Navy in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Patriotic Order Sons of America-Washington Hall.

George loved his grandchildren and he was extremely proud of them. Hunting and fishing were his two favorite pastimes.

Mr. Beitzel was a 1934 graduate of Reading High School and a graduate of Wyomissing Poly-Tech.

He was a lifelong member of St. Thomas UCC, Reading, where he was also a member of the church council.

George is also survived by a son, Dale C., husband of Linda L. (Yeakel) Beitzel, Fleetwood. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Christopher A. and Kathleen L. Beitzel.

Services will be at Sanders Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 1501 N. 11th St., Reading, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 31. Friends are invited to call the funeral home on Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. The burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Endowment Fund-St. Thomas UCC, 851 N. 11th St., Reading, PA 19604.

43 Helen Marie Sheesley Harnish, 83, of Knox, formerly of Lamartine, went home to be with her Lord and Savior at 4:35 p.m., Saturday, April 25, 2015, at the Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitaion Center, Sligo, after many years of declining health. Born May 26, 1931, in Elk City, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Nellie Wingard Sheesley.

She was a 1949 graduate of Salem High School and a member of the Salem Lutheran Church, both in Lamartine.

Helen was married in the Salem Lutheran Church on June 15, 1957, to Harry James Harnish, of St. Petersburg, and he survives.

She worked on the assembly line at Sylvania Electric Products, Inc. in Brookville from 1950 to 1961, left in preparation for raising her four children, then when her youngest child had entered school, she was a baker and salad bar preparations cook at Rhea's Motel and Restaurant in Shippenville. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, a lifelong member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Lamartine, sewed dresses for her three daughters and was an accomplished cook and baker, taught Sunday school to the youngest of God's children for many years as she raised her family. Her husband was the elected tax collector of Salem Township for over 12 years, but Helen also collected the taxes and visited with the people. In the fall, she sold chestnuts that the family gathered from their own trees. Local people, as well as those from out-of-state, came back annually to buy her nuts.

Interment will follow at the Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery.

47 James L. Amsler Jr., 84 of Knox passed away Monday, October 14, 2013 following a lengthy illness. Born April 13, 1929, in Seneca he was the son of the late James and Hazel Amsler.

On February 13, 1953 Jim married Ellen Cicman and she survives.

After high school Jim joined the Army and served in the Korean War. Jim worked for PA Dept. of Transportation and was a member of the Clarion County Rod and Gun Club and the Knox American Legion Post 720.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters Brenda Polatty of Shippenville, and Lynn Neely and her husband Denny of Shippenville, five grandchildren Jamie Hooks and her husband Cory of Shippenville, Stephanie Polatty of Steamboat Springs, CO, Casey Neely and his wife Meagan of Lucinda, Cody ?Buck? Neely of Valencia, and Andrew Polatty of Clarion, and three great-grandchildren Trenton Hooks, Treyven Hooks and Tyson Hooks. Also surviving are two brothers George Amsler and Thomas Amsler.

Along with his parents Jim was preceded in death by three brothers Cecil Amsler, Robert Amsler and Richard Amsler.

48 Janice Sheesley, 81, of Littlestown, PA passed away on 10 August 2018 at her home. Born on November 15, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Evelyn Wolf, the late Joseph Kemp and the late George Wolf. She was the devoted wife of the late Rev. Dwight L. Sheesley, to whom she was married for 55 years. She was also preceded in death by her son, Dwight Sheesley Jr. and grandson, Geoffrey Ford. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Ford and husband, George of Severn, MD; daughter, Cindy Hash and husband, Russell of Shrewsbury, PA; son, Kevin Sheesley and wife, Jane, of Pasadena, MD; grandchildren, Diana and Dan Speelman, Nicholas Ford, Gregory Ford, Andrea Hash, Phillip and Nicole Hash, Trevor Hash, Jamie Barrows, Daniel and Victoria Barbour and Kevin Sheesley; and great grandchildren, Alyssa and Luke Speelman, Aiden Barrows and Kylie and Aubrey Barbour. She was very involved with church activities.

Her favorite pastimes were crocheting, knitting and reading. She also had a love for NASCAR racing. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her sense of humor and kind heart made her a special person to a lot of people.

Interment at Glen Haven Memorial Park in Glen Burnie.
